The Electoral Commission (EC) says effective 2017, Ghana will implement an all-year-round voter registration.
Deputy Communications Officer of the EC, Yusif Alhassan Ayuba, in an interview with Sangmorkie Tetteh for State of Affairs Friday, revealed that his outfit and “the political parties have agreed on the modalities for continuous registration” as required by CI 91.
He revealed that from next year “every Friday of the week would be set aside for the continuous registration exercise.”
Alhassan Ayuba explained that the move is expected to significantly reduce the overwhelming numbers that turn up whenever such an exercise is carried out.
The deputy EC spokesperson also touched on the registration extension for new voters in the 2016 elections which was scheduled for August 19 and 26:
Sharing their opinions, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Emmanuel Kyeremanten Agyarko and Dr. Evans Aggrey, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana also reiterated that Ghana needs a comprehensive and authentic identification system in order to successfully run an all-year-round voter registration.
