The Chief Executive of the Mental Health Authority, Dr Akwasi Osei, has revealed his outfit is setting up mental health committees to absorb mental health issues in every Region.
The committees which have been set up in all ten regional capitals are to ensure they undertake community outreach programs that will inform people about signs and symptoms of depression and all other mental health issues “that are likely to cause one to behave in an erratic manner.
There have been reports of people believed to be mentally retarded killing others in parts of the country.
The latest is a mentally deranged man who ‘butchered’ his entire family at Assin Krofuom in the Central Region.
Akoto Osei who earlier linked the cases to possible states of depression and stress a majority of Ghanaians are suffering, on Monday told Accra based Joy News there was the need for people to be educated on mental health and how to identify depression and it’s triggers in order for them to seek help.
“All what we are doing now is building a very strong foundation so that the planned education could go on and people would feel at ease visiting mental health facilities to seek help,” he said.
“A lot is going on but underground. Right now we are setting up Regional mental health sub communities so it would be decentralized,” he added.
