At 7am, the polls open for Ghana’s 7th election under the 4th republic with seven candidates up in contention for the presidency while 275 others expected to be elected into positions as Members of Parliament.
Incumbent President John Dramani Mahama is seeking a second term and by extension, the third for his National Democratic Congress (NDC). He however faces a stern challenge from Nana Akufo-Addo of the main opposition group the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Akufo-Addo is hopeful of being third time lucky after narrowly missing the race in the 2008 and 2012 elections.
Other candidates hoping to win the race to the Flagstaff House include Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom (Progressive People’s Party), Dr. Edward Mahama (People’s National Convention), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (National Democratic Party) and Independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah.
