50 percent wage increase: Labour expert slams minister for pre-empting gov’t

Labour expert, Mr. Y.B Amponsah has chided the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu for dismissing calls for a 50% wage increase being demanded  by public sector workers.

Labour Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has thrown away demands by Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) and the Tema District Council of Labour, asking for an increment in wages to commensurate the recent increases in taxes, petroleum products as well as the hikes in utility tariffs.

According to him, such demands are untenable, insisting that government’s resolve to introduce extra taxes in the system, essentially goes to help the state settle outstanding debts for which reason the taxes were introduced.

In an interview with Kasapa News, Mr. Amponsah said it is unfortunate that the Minister made those claims without first opening up the issue for any discussion.

For him, the Minister has pre-empted government on the matter.

“There should exist some cooperation between government and labour, because they’re seen as social partners. It’s an unfortunate statement from the Minister. He cannot make a definite pronouncement without consultations. He’s pre-empted government and more so didn’t accord respect to labour.”
