Three people have suffered critical injuries in an accident at the Gomoa Andam section of the Accra-Cape Coast road.
The accident involved a Sprinter bus with registration number AS 8823 – 10 carrying passengers from Accra to Bogoso and a Toyota V8 Sequoia (GT 170 – 15) heading the opposite direction from Cape Coast.
According to eyewitness accounts, the presence of a mentally-challenged person on the lane of the Accra-bound vehicle forced the driver to veer off into the lane of the sprinter bus, hence the crash.
All 23 people on board the Sprinter vehicle sustained various degrees of injuries and are responding to treatment at the Apam Government Hospital while the driver of the Toyota V8 Sequoia, identified as Isaac Yeboah is receiving medical attention at the Shama Hospital in Winneba.
Speaking to GHOne TV Central regional Correspondent Kwaku Baah-Acheamfour on the accident, regional director of the Road Safety Commission, Stephen Anokye narrated that “it has been alleged that there was a mentally ill man who was walking in the way of the Toyota vehicle and in an attempt to avoid him, he crashed into the side of the benz”, and “in the process landed into the bush on the driver’s side.”
No casualty has been recorded, he added.
Some of the victims of the accident were female students of the St. Augustine’s School in Bogoso, Edinaman Senior High School at Elmina in the Central region and a Junior High School student from Wassa Akropong in the Western Region.
