VIDEO: Gyan no longer interested in buying Liberty shares – Afriyie

Former Liberty Professionals striker and Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has pulled out of plans to purchase shares in the Dansoman-based Ghana Premier League club.

Gyan had developed interest in becoming a part owner the club weeks after coming to their aid by settling some bonuses and unpaid salaries during the 2015/16 football season.

News of Gyan’s interest made its way to the media with the 30-year old forced to come out in denial.

But a Director of the club, George Afriyie in an interview with GHOne Sports, has confirmed mooting the idea to the former Sunderland man.

According to him, Gyan pulled out after his move became public saying he would rather stay on the sidelines and support them when he is needed to.

“It is important that when we are with players, we are able to advise them on what they can do after football. Remember, he cannot be playing forever. At a certain point, he would want to branch into administration or coaching or whatever else the future can do for him [sic],” George Afriyie said.

“Some of us thought that why can’t we convince him to be a shareholder in [the club]? So it was something of a suggestion from some of us.”

“I don’t know how portions of the media got wind of it but for now, he has informed me that he is no longer interested. I can’t say whether in future he would want to be part but the last time I spoke to him, he is no more interested in being part of the shareholders of the club,” he added.
