Newly sworn in Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa North constituency, Gifty Ampofo Twum has declared war against Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Emmanuel Victor Smith, saying she will push him to retire from politics.
Victor Smith, picked forms on Wednesday July 20, to file his nomination to run for the governing National Democratic Congress’ primary for the Abuakwa North constituency following the resignation of the party’s elected nominee, Anthony Gyimah.
Twum who is confident she can beat the NDC parliamentary hopeful was debunking claims she had gone into hiding since Smith picked forms to run in the NDC parliamentary primaries.
“There is this guy who calls himself aide to Ambassador Smith telling people I am afraid because he is back to run. Tell him I fear no one. It is Smith who should be afraid,” she said on Accra FM Tuesday morning.
“He had given up on local politics. And when he was made commissioner to the UK he never thought of returning to run as MP, he neglected the people, and anytime he visited from the UK he would not fraternize with those who matter [the constituents], but call to his house his close friends and associates. I know this because I live close to his house.”
Twum further stated Victor Smith had the opportunity to strategically position himself in a way that would make him more loved by the people but he didn’t because he “simply doesn’t care”.
“When he was abroad he didn’t think to use his connections to bring development to the constituency, meanwhile that’s where a lot of NGOs are, a lot of collaborations he could have taken advantage of. But he couldn’t do anything for his town folks,” she pointed out.
She also stated it was shameful for Smith to come back to Ghana from his post in the UK following the death of the late MP Joseph Boakye Damkwa who was his competitor in the 2012 race.
“The minute he heard my big brother JB Dankwa had passed and it is a lady who is contesting this time he came running.
“It is disgusting to see a man who was competing with a man, run from the battleground, conceding defeat, but comes running back thinking because it’s a woman this time he would lace his boots.
“That is why I Gifty Ampofo Twum, I am saying I will make him retire from politics. I will cause him to go on compulsory retirement, I will give him a gab that could make him a casualty to politics because I am not lacing my boots as he is, I am wearing them and they fit tightly,” she said.
