President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministers of Education, Health and Sports to re-introduce Physical Education, more commonly referred to as P.E into the education curriculum.
Presenting the State of the Nation address on Thursday 25 February, 2016, the President said he believes in leading a “healthy nation” above all things, hence the huge amounts of monies invested into healthcare.
According to him, student’s participation in sports will reduce diseases among the youth.
“Mr. Speaker, one cannot speak of health without speaking of physical exercise, there is the need to introduce physical education or sports unto our school curriculum as the current situation where PE and Sports has been de-emphasized in the academic curriculum is in the long run directly costly.
“It directly impacts the health outcomes of students in the area of students in the area of obesity and such illness that arises in their sedentary lives, it is plain to see the benefits far outweigh the cost and I have asked the ministers of education, health and sports to initiate stakeholders discussions to ensure the adequate re- integration of sports back into the school curriculum,” President Mahama added.
